With the US Elections, later in the year, people are concerned with the role that AI will play.
Maybe it would have been better if the AI genie had never been let out of the bottle as trying to put it back in there seems impossible.
There are obviously advantages to AI but when put in the wrong hands for the wrong means, it can be extremely damaging.
While it’s great that the powers that be want to curb it or regulate its use for elections, who’s going to do this for everyday use?
AI can have a massive influence and impact in shaping one’s online reputation. First of all, it can make a brand appear a lot better than it actually is. It can be used to not only cover up stuff but shower them in praise and positivity that shouldn’t be there.
Imagine you look up a restaurant and are impressed by all the positive reviews. Based on these you have a meal there and are quite upset with the experience you have as well as the meals. How would you feel after the fact if you find out that the reviews were written by AI? Most likely, very unhappy.
Then you have AI being able to defame and smear a brand via negative reviews and comments, social media posts that put them down and articles that are extremely uncomplimentary.
All this combines to create an environment where we can’t put any faith in what we see and read.
This was always the case – but even more so in today’s day and age.
What’s the solution?
When it comes to something like reviews, something has to change. There needs to be some sort of system in place whereby we can trust them, otherwise what is the point of them? We need to know they are legitimate reviews that aren’t compromised in any way, shape or form.
Whether the review is good or bad, we want to know that what they’re writing is an account of their actual experience.
With other content, it’s much harder to police. When watching a video of something happening, how are you to know if it’s a deepfake or not? There’s nothing to confirm or deny it one way or another.
So this is the world we live in.
Maybe the only way forward is to scrap AI altogether but it’s probably too late for that.
